If concerned about the possibility of a trip to London costing the proverbial arm and leg, feel free to congratulate yourself on being right on the money – the ‘Big Smoke’ often comes with a big bill attached. However, by knowing where to go and steering clear of the endlessly uninspiring tourist traps and those tempting 3 piece suit designers on Saville Row, there is every possibility of spending a good week or so in the capital and hardly spending a penny.Museums – London offers quite simply the best museums in the world with the very best collections and the best temporary exhibitions, the vast majority of which are free of charge all year round. From awe-inspiring wonders at the Natural History Museum to a haunting reminder at the Imperial War Museum and dozens of others besides, visitors could easily spend a week doing the rounds and still see only a tiny fraction of what’s on offer.

Galleries – Exactly the same as the above, some of the most important galleries in the world displaying masterpieces from every name in the book are on offer 100% free of charge all year round – galleries the likes of which would set visitors back a small fortune anywhere else. Trafalgar Square – Perhaps more of a sight to visit rather than while away a number of hours on, Trafalgar Square remains perhaps the most quintessentially iconic British square in the country. Generally speaking there is always something going on here, from seasonal markets to live performances to animated protests and countless others – on quiet days thought here is always the free National Gallery gracing its northern side.

Street Performances – There are a few known hotspots for street performers in London, with the two most prominent examples being the South Bank by the London Eye and Covent Garden. Most of the acts present today are nothing less than seasoned and dedicated professionals the likes of whom are quite spectacularly talented, asking nothing other than a small (and optional) donation after performances usually lasting 20 minutes or so. The variety is simply incredible. Parks – Last but not least, London’s parks are raved about the world over for very good reason and really come to life in the late spring and early summer. While Hyde Park offers an excellent base for a lazy day of strolling and perhaps a spin on the lake, Primrose Hill is every bit as good as Hollywood for spotting A-Listers walking their dogs and pretending to be as normal as the rest of us.

The British Museum is renowned for hosting some of the most impressive artefacts and exhibition stands on the globe. With its impressive architecture and stunning patterned roof, it is also a popular place for photography. Even though visitors can explore countless numbers of historic objects, only a small minority of them are visible at any one time. Many people visit the Lindow Man and the Rosetta Stone while others attend the museum’s special exhibitions, which are constantly updated each year. Entry is free, although donations are strongly encouraged, particularly at a time when many British cultural and art venues are being hit hard by strict budget cuts

One of the major events that takes place at the British Museum every year is the Enlightenment exhibition, which hosts 5,000 special objects that represent the period from the middle of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. The Enlightenment period also coincided with the birth of the British Museum itself, thanks to an Act of Parliament.

Another permanent exhibition is ’Living and Dying’, which takes place at the Wellcome Trust Gallery. This event takes a look at how historic populations have attempted to combat disease and come to terms with death, assessing the public’s attitudes to mourning and funerals, including Western attitudes to human illness. Galleries include impressions of Ancient Iran and famous artefacts dating back to the Persian Empire, including a gallery that focuses on prehistoric life in the Middle East and Europe. ’Living and Dying'analyses how the development of agriculture led to permanent changes to society and takes visitors through a journey that is both fascinating and highly education at the same time.

Situated in central London, the British Museum is easily reached from Russell Square or Tottenham Court Road Tube Stations and is also open late on Friday evenings.

London, just like other major cities in the world, is full of people from different countries in the world. Apart from those who come in from other European countries, there are many that have come from Asia, Africa and America. Along with this great cultural diversity, it is also a fact that people who immigrate to London are mostly those who are ambitious and want to make it big in one of the biggest cities of the world. Being ambitious is very good, but as we all know ambitious people have an aggressive side to them.

Is it possible for so many different cultures to coexist together? Apparently it is possible, but not without some hiccups. Every now and then you can hear clashes between people who are from different cultural background. Unfortunately, the moment you get into a problem, people over here don’t just create an image about you in their mind, but also of the culture you come from. This kind of behavior can create a situation like the recent riots in London.

It is a common understanding that being religious helps a human being to be social and good. However, nowadays it seems like it is religion that is creating walls around people. One of the problems with closing yourself within any kind of walls is that you start assuming about others who are also assuming about you within their walls. This assumption can fan the rage or hatred you might have picked up on a specific culture group, because someone from that culture group misbehaved with you. While living in this kind of set up, it is important to have things that could break these communal, cultural and religious walls. This is where cultural events become so important. Events organized by a specific culture or group of cultures are a window that allows us to get a closer view of reality, rather than assumptions. Last week as I went to a shop to buy executive office furniture, I was handed a flyer of a cultural event organized by a Chinese foundation. The event was held in the Lewisham leisure center and to say the least it was an eye opener for me. It gave an inner view to the Chinese society. Just like the rest of the world, I also had some negative assumptions of the Chinese and even though this has not changed completely, I think that they are certainly better than what I thought.

I found this office furniture website the other day which simply blew my mind. I was all amazed and really enjoying looking at the office chairs, you know how it is, right? It was then, staring at the screen, that I knew I had been neglecting the arts and culture of the city of London: I had become a work zombie! I was beginning to enjoy looking for work furniture! I was beginning to turn into a table and chair junkie! It really wasn’t good and marked a new level of awfulness in the thing that was known as my boring office life (although I should say that the site was still really good, if you need office furniture). I soon shook myself out of my work trance, told myself that yes I liked my job but no I wouldn’t be brainwashed anymore, and set off on an online mission to find something else to look forward to…something which would be fun and enlightening…

the first proper, full-on exhibition of the great man’s landscape art..

I soon got my wish in the form of an advertisement for a brand-new David Hockney exhibition. It’s called A Bigger Picture, and it’s going to be on show at the Royal Academy of Arts from the date of 21st January to the 9th of April. Woo! Can you tell I am slightly excited?

Why should you be excited and all ants-in-your pants about this great coming of cultural significance? Well, I shall tell you my friend: this is going to be, without doubt – and according to the information I have been given – the first proper, full-on exhibition of the great man’s landscape art. The really intriguing thing, though, is the scale. Because we’re not talking small paintings here. We’re talking enormous works of art which are simply massive in scale…the kind of pieces which blow your mind the second you walk into the room!

If you still don’t know – and really, shame on you – the man known as David Hockney was born in 1937 in the fine city of Bradford. For the next 18 or so years he was in Yorkshire – although the interesting thing is that he didn’t actually focus on England as a subject until he was about 60 years old. Once he did, though, he became instantly well-known and an important figure in art almost over-night. In other words, you need to get yourself down to that exhibition as soon as the new year celebrations are over, or else you will regret it!

The news is now out that ‘Backbeat'the Beatles biopic will be adapted for the stage. The show is set to debut this September in the West End at the Duke of York’s theatre.

Now print posters will likely be placed in all media and no doubt theatre goers and Beadle fans alike will be clamouring to see it.

Based on the film released in 1994, the musical follow the ascension to fame of the Beatles. The musical follows along as they set out from the docks of their hometown of Liverpool to play many a rock and roll gigs in some of the not so wonderful areas of Hamburg.

Backbeat focuses on the relationship that exists between John Lennon, his best friend Stuart Sutcliffe who was the bands original bassists, and the girl Sutcliffe was in love with, photographer Astrid Kirchherr. The musical is to feature some of the rock and roll classics such as ‘Please Mr. Postman’, ‘Long tall Sally’, and ‘Twist and Shout’.

The producer of this theatrical performance has said that ‘Backbeat'will give people an insight into the Beatles and how they came about. The story that will be portrayed will be one that many people including Beatle fans may not know. 2012 will be a monumental year in Beatle history as it will mark the 50th anniversary of their very first single.

Lovers of Beatle music and history will certainly be in for a treat and no doubt many will want to see ‘Backbeat over and over again.

The Electric Boogaloos and guests headline an evening of original dance that has inspired the modern hip hop craze as well as legendary artists (including Michael Jackson) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre this July.

A one night only performance on the 16th will see the legendary group perform moves that you may have recognised from over the past two decades. Michael Jackson famously approached the group following his viewing of a concert asking them to help choreograph dance moves for both the Thriller and Bad videos.

In the early 70s Boogaloo Sam (that is his real name) created a series of movements for dance that eventually evolved into more complex routines. In 1977 he formed The Electric Boogaloos and ever since they have influenced Hip Hop and are responsible for the world wide ‘popping'craze that surface in the late 70s. As it is rare to see this group perform live anywhere in the world, it is recommended that you book a seat for their London date at the Southbank. Their moves are so complex and interesting yet the group make it all look relaxed and easy.

The group have relied on simple marketing over the years and they still mainly utilise everyday tools including standard flyers, pvc banners, posters and most importantly word of mouth. Boogaloo Sam himself didn’t really like making a big deal of the group’s success when they first became popular and that ethos has remained in all their marketing practices.

Try something different on the 16th July and let The Electric Boogaloos sway you.

After school at the Museum of Childhood is an interesting cultural experience. This vast museum with its sandpit and banner stands is a massive tourist attraction, it is also a haven for busy city parents that need desperately to spend some quiet time with their kids in a safe place. Have you wondered what has happened to sand pits? When I was growing up they were at every play ground that I frequented. Apparently they are not kosher with health and safety for all of the horrors that could be deposited in the sand. The one on the top level of the museum is an absolute jewel. The children are invited to take their shoes off, there is an array of buckets, spades, molds, and sifters to play with and best of all, a selection of deck chairs for tired parents to hang out in. Off to the side, there is even a juke box to spin some tunes to relax to. If you are trying to balance the needs of a younger child with that of an older child, there is a set of board games to play, including historic ones that you need to read the instructions and easily recognizable things like snakes and ladders. The thing that struck me the most was that in the cafe in the centre of the building a busy dad in a suit was texting somebody on his black berry while a contented child ate a very expensive ice cream. I love this place.

Hackney City Farm is one of those jewels that should not be missed. It has the standard accoutrements of your traditional city farm. You will find pigs, chickens, ducks, horses, some sheep, a goat, and at least one cow. In addition to all of these there are several absolutely beautiful areas that are geared towards urban growing education. There is a quiet growing garden where you can get an educational lesson about DNA testing, and an open field to see the small horses in action. The Hackney City farm maintains a very proactive stance towards hygiene with outdoor hand washing stations very well sign posted and gated areas to limit the possibility of contagion. One of the things that makes the modern city farm stand out is its cafe. If you frequent city farm cafes you will note that they usually feature uber hip and ultra local food. The best ones will feature products that are made with live stock that has been reared on site as well as fresh laid eggs. The St. Werburgh’s city farm cafe in Bristol is a fine example of this, as well as the Windmill hill city farm cafe on the other side of town. Windmill hill is a bit more down to earth with its menu selection and it reflects the nature of the community that surrounds it. The Hackney city farm cafe does try to do something for everybody. It is a warm child friendly environment with a wide range of both affordable and some what posh food on offer.

There are few exterior signs that help you find it. After I was there, I understood that if there was more advertising there would be absolutely no way to moderate the flow of children. It is amazing. In the basement of the Science Museum in London is one of the most magical and fabulous children’s educational play areas that I have ever seen.

The thing about going to free museums in London, is that you always have to weigh your desire for a good time, against the throng of the hideous crowds. This is one reason why I have not yet been to the Natural History Museum and why I have been to the Museum of Childhood 4 times. The Science Museum is a brilliant compromise.

The first time I was there, I only made it to the larger scientific play area that is on the upper floors. I was not really all that impressed. It is designed for older children, and doesn’t really stand up to big crowds as the youth are fighting their way in to play with things, that are experiments and not really toys at all.

It is called ’the garden'it is in the basement of the museum and it is meant for under 5’s. These descriptions from their website, I think additionally try to discourage people from going there. It has the most amazing water feature I have ever seen. It is like a big water shoot so that kids can learn about flow, and they provide rain gear. There is a huge climbing frame thingy so that they can understand machines and gravity and a section devoted to music, sound, and light. There is some sort of weird thing that you climb into that has soft toys, don’t know about educational value, but it is lots of fun.

If you are looking for a fantastic day out with little and big kids, do not miss the Science Museum

London is one of the world’s most popular cities for tourists. Millions stream in through London Heathrow and the other half-dozen local airports every year in order to see the birth-place of the British empire, the place where the Queen lives, and the internationally famous House of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. But it’s not just history that should draw tourists to visit the capital of the United Kingdom. While that’s just as good a reason as any, there is a much better reason to visit the capital.
London is one of the world’s few cultural capitals. While the nation may not have the same international clout as in recent years in the political sphere, and to some extent in the economic sphere, it’s clear that London remains a key player in world culture. This is perhaps best seen in the huge number of really good art galleries that London has to offer. The Tate Modern is a must visit for all visitors who come to London. Firstly, and best of all for tourists, it’s free. It may not be exactly on the route of the tourists buses, and it may not be all about London, it displays some incredible and invigorating art that will stimulate the senses and provide a lot of food for thoughts after you’ve walked around the city for a number of hours.
After all, after spending a year working with money using Galvan Research and Trading for example, it’s makes sense that tourists would want their holiday to be a time when they can become immersed in culture. If the art galleries don’t quite do it for you then you can always head to the West End to catch one of the famous musicals or theatre productions, or head to a music venue like London’s Astoria or the O2 Arena to see some of the world’s best musical performers.
