The Science Museum

There are few exterior signs that help you find it. After I was there, I understood that if there was more advertising there would be absolutely no way to moderate the flow of children. It is amazing. In the basement of the Science Museum in London is one of the most magical and fabulous children’s educational play areas that I have ever seen.

The thing about going to free museums in London, is that you always have to weigh your desire for a good time, against the throng of the hideous crowds. This is one reason why I have not yet been to the Natural History Museum and why I have been to the Museum of Childhood 4 times. The Science Museum is a brilliant compromise.

The first time I was there, I only made it to the larger scientific play area that is on the upper floors. I was not really all that impressed. It is designed for older children, and doesn’t really stand up to big crowds as the youth are fighting their way in to play with things, that are experiments and not really toys at all.

It is called ’the garden'it is in the basement of the museum and it is meant for under 5’s. These descriptions from their website, I think additionally try to discourage people from going there. It has the most amazing water feature I have ever seen. It is like a big water shoot so that kids can learn about flow, and they provide rain gear. There is a huge climbing frame thingy so that they can understand machines and gravity and a section devoted to music, sound, and light. There is some sort of weird thing that you climb into that has soft toys, don’t know about educational value, but it is lots of fun.

If you are looking for a fantastic day out with little and big kids, do not miss the Science Museum
